( not the) The old Borough Treasurer's Office

.

.
This fine looking building is on the corner of Howard Street and Charlotte Street in North Shields. At least part of it was once the old Borough Treasurer's Office. An estate agents premises spoils the frontage with a modern and out of character facade; the building also houses the Exchange Bistro. Since posting this , Novocastrian has helpfully pointed out it was the old police station ( see comments below). The Treasurers's office is on the extreme left.

  1. I seem to remember there was a Restaurant in an inner courtyard in this building, am I correct or is my eggtimers disease creeping up?

  2. Keith; you're correct; it's called the Exchange Bistro.

  3. The Borough Surveyor's office was on the left in Howard Street. The corner and right side (actually Saville Street) was the Police Station. That Estate agent's facade is a disgrace.

  4. I think the shop on the corner was once showroom of the Tynemouth borough electricity department.
