Dunstanburgh Castle














































The ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle  , dating from 1313, are set on cliffs above the North Sea.

The first picture was taken when the artist had just set up his easel, the second was taken later in the day when he had almost completed a work in pastels.

Dunstanburgh Castle

Dunstanburgh Castle stands on a rocky headland on the Northumberland coast. It is seen here from across Embleton Bay. The main remains of the castle date from 1313 when Earl Thomas of Lancaster, cousin of King Edward II, began construction of this massive fortress. The castle is maintained and managed by the National Trust

Dunstanburgh Castle

This massive Northumbrian fortress sits on a spectacular coastal headland. Thomas of Lancaster, cousin of the english king Edward II , began construction in 1313. John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster improved the castle in the late 14th century. The castle encloses an area of 11 acres (4.5 ha).
