the Turks Head























The Turks Head pub in Tynemouth was  built in 1850 and has a listed front facade of white tiling.  Inside the pub, in a glass case,  is a stuffed dog called Wandering Willie who is reputed to have been a regular at the pub,on his death in in 1880 the owners of the pub   had him stuffed and displayed, where he remains to this day. The pub is on Front Street which is currently undergoing major road works as can be seen here.

King's School Tynemouth

King's School in Tynemouth was originally founded in Jarrow in 1860 but moved to its present site in 1860. It is a private co-educational school with over 800 pupils aged between 4 and 18. The school was originally called Tynemouth School and did not become known as The King's School until the 1960s. The school's name refers to three kings, Oswin, Osred and Malcolm III who were buried at nearby Tynemouth Priory.

The Spanish Battery car park at Tynemouth is a popular spot for visitors taking in the view and also for the local gull population who know that a regular supply of leftovers from fish and chip takeaways will be theirs. The North and South piers at the river mouth can be seen here behind the excited flock.

Martineau Guest House

The Martineau Guest House on Front Street, Tynemouth is named after Harriet Martineau (June 12, 1802 – June 27, 1876) . Harriet was a social reformer and author who lived in the house during the 1840's and whilst there wrote at least three books, including a novel about the Haitian slave leader Toussaint L'Ouverture.

New Years Day. Tynemouth Castle

Heavy snow fell in the North-East overnight and this morning. This picture shows Tynemouth Castle. The site has been fortified for hundreds of years being a strategic location at the mouth of the Tyne; the present castle was built in the 14th century with later additions.

In the United Kingdom the second Sunday of November is marked by ceremonies at local war memorials . Wreaths of poppies are laid in memory of the fallen and a two minutes' silence is held at 11 a.m.

Tynemouth North Pier

Building of the 2 piers at the mouth of the Tyne began in 1854, and the North Pier, pictured here, was completed in 1895. A great storm in 1897 breached this pier and it was rebuilt and completed 14 years later in 1907. The Lighthouse at the end of the pier was built in 1903.
