Fleet

Fleet, by Irene Brown, is a collection of seven stainless steel collier ships in full sail, set in the water of Market Dock, overlooking the River Tyne at South Shields. A collier was a coal carrying ship. Coal was once the lifeblood of the Tyneside economy.

  1. They are really striking. This would be an expensive installation. In the USA, most coal that is transported on the water moves by barges, not under sail.

  2. Blimey, they look beautiful and worth a visit. I'd never heard of them before. Yet another thing to go on my 'to do' list in the summer hols!
    Are they a permanent feature?

  3. I like these - I presume they are static otherwise they'd float out to sea..
