The Swing Bridge


The Swing Bridge  in Newcastle upon Tyne  was first used for road traffic on 15 June 1876 and opened for river traffic on 17 July 1876.

Christmas Market in Newcastle




Every winter a  Christmas Market   is held near Grey's Monument in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. This year a  Continental Market takes place between  22 November and  4 December and the Christmas Market takes place between  8 December and  12 December. This picture shows a Polish food stall during the snow last week.

Grey Street


A few pedestrians braved the early winter snows on  Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne yesterday. Grey Street was described by architectural writer Sir Nikolaus Pevsner   as one of the finest streets in England.

Bamburgh Castle


Bamburgh Castle  stands on a rocky basalt outcrop on the Northumberland North Sea Coast. Site of ancient fortress destroyed by the Vikings, re-built by the Normans and re-structured by Lord Armstrong in Victorian times.

The Fish Quay and old High Light, North Shields

























In the foreground can be seen the Fish Quay at North Shields on the River Tyne. The tall white building is called the old High Light, once a navigational aid to ships entering the river it is now a residential house.

Conversation Piece






















Conversation Piece by the late Spanish sculptor Juan Munoz is located near Littlehaven in South Shields at the mouth of the River Tyne. The sculpture consists of 22 bronze figures which were installed in 1999 as part of an Art on the Riverside programme.
